BETWEEN, WV — THE UNCANNY, FOLKLORIC MIRROR
Tone: Liminal, uncanny, charming, and unsettling. Proud of its weirdness.
Architecture: First Period Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival and Victorian Gothic (think Salem, MA).
Town Type: Twisting and winding with the mountain and waterways. They learned their lesson the first time around and only build with nature now, not against it.
Population: ~2,000–2,500.
Slightly larger than Mercy, with more active tourism (people come for the UFO lore, portals, thrift shops, etc.). Businesses flourish because visitors bring money, but residents are still locals-first—they’ll smile at you, but they’re smiling because you don’t know what’s going on.
Main Road: Due to the geography of Between, being settled between two rivers, there is only one road in and out of Between. Route 340 North and 340 South. These highways will allow access to the larger interstate highway system.
Local's views on other towns:
On Ruin: “It’s haunted, and it knows it.” Between folks see Ruin as a place with serious magic and serious baggage. They respect it, but they also think Ruin takes itself too seriously—bound up in grief and legacy instead of finding wonder.
On Mercy: “All locked doors and shuttered windows.” They find Mercy joyless, brittle, and hostile. If you’re from Between and you have to drive through Mercy, you keep your head down, don’t stop, don’t wave.
