Are they your run of the mill simple squishies with no knowledge other than what the typical human would have? In a place like Between, that might make them more interesting.

In more recent history there were the Ganzfeld Experiment, China’s Psychic Children, and more than one type of MIKUltra experiments to test, torture, and find solid scientific results about extrasensory perception (ESP). There, of course, was never any solid findings that would take ESP from parapsychology to scientific theory.
Humans are willing to dig into other humans to try and capture proof of something is like trying to say cutting into the heart or brain will produce the soul. This innate part of human capability is untouchable. It cannot be captured or found in the physical body and sadly, when touched by scientists, they tend to push too hard until the subject breaks or dies creating damage to the crucial elements of their experiments.
Gifted humans are very real. They are anomalies and there is a difference in their translation between DNA and RNA. These people contain a universe of coding that allows them to tap into kinetic energies that do not bend reality or the natural world. They are themselves the catalyst, the spark, of kinetic energy that allows their innate abilities to bleed from within their body out into reality. Not manipulating or changing reality, but existing within and outside of it at the same time.
The main understanding about Gifted Humans is that their abilities are not connected to the natural world. The power or ability is within them and only them. The extent of their skill is within a specific radius of them and their control is solely relatued to how often they practice to hone it like any basic skill. The sphere of their control is through one path.
Example: Pyrokinesis would be the mental control of fire. The pyrokinetic would have one main way of controlling fire - hand motions, breathing, or some other physical way that they feel the energy within them moving outward.
This skill for an elemental witch would fall under the school of transmutation to control fire. They can do this many different ways - spell, ritual, or it may be an innate gift that comes with a snap of fingers, a wave of hand, or however they feel it would be most useful to them in the moment.
The other difference is concentration. A Gifted Human’s effect would fade or end with the loss of concentration as where a Witch’s floating fireball they’re using to read by will maintain itself until it is dispelled because its very nature of creation was to tell reality that this ball of fire exists naturally as the Witch wills it.
Finally, Witches come from a bloodline. Gifted humans are anomalies and can come from any type of family. They may human siblings or even be the anomaly in a family of witches.
