Welcome to Between, WV — A 21+ Adult Journal RPG
This is a mature, horror-mystery writing game set in an atmospheric Appalachian town steeped in myth, mystery, and mischief. Themes may include murder, sex, torture, psychological trauma, abuse, religious corruption, body horror, and in-character death.

By applying, you agree to engage with these fictional themes as a writer, not as a participant.

We encourage all forms of writing and creative expression.
Quality of writing and storytelling matters far more than graphics or formatting. To make participation accessible, we’ve provided resources for basic coding and formatting—use them as you wish, but there’s no need to be flashy for the sake of appearance.

If you enjoy coding and design, feel free to incorporate it into your posts, but remember: formatting and graphics do not count toward activity.

Between: Rules
CONTENT WARNING
  • Violence, gore, and trauma are part of the setting — but consent and clarity still matter.
  • Tag all logs/scenes with appropriate content warnings. All scenes should be placed behind a cut.

  • All mature scenes (especially those involving harm or death) must be plotted and agreed upon by all players involved. No surprise assaults or kills.
  • Due to the mature nature of this game, all journals are f-locked. Every entry must be coded to be f-locked upon posting.

  • It is as true here as everywhere else: if you don’t want to read sex, violence, or other dark topics, then do not read them.
    AGE REQUIREMENTS + PB
  • All players must be legal adults (21+) capable of handling dark content responsibly.
  • All characters must be 25+ due to the themes and tone of the game.
  • PBs must be 21+ in their icons and within ten (10) years of the character’s age.
  • PBs should be known actors, musicians, or models. IG models, social personalities, cosplayers, and adult film workers are not permitted.
  • METAGAMING + OOC/IC
This is a collaborative storytelling game that relies on open OOC communication. Keep the following in mind:
  • No OOC/IC blending. Characters may lie, cheat, kill, or manipulate — that does not reflect the player.
  • Understand that IC actions will have IC consequences.
  • No godmodding. Do not control another player’s character, reactions, or outcomes without clear, written permission. (This includes attempting to dictate another character’s emotional response; characters can misread or misjudge others just like real people do.)
  • No metagaming. Your character cannot act on OOC knowledge. If your character shouldn’t know it, don’t write it.
  • If you are uncomfortable, speak OOC — either directly to the player or to the mods. Silence helps no one.
  • If conflict arises between players, first attempt calm communication. If resolution fails or you cannot engage with the other player, contact the mod team.

  • !Keep personal conflict out of game channels and content!
    COMMUNITY + COLLABORATION
  • This is a collaborative game. Communicate. Plot. Build with others. Respect boundaries. Ask before entering someone’s character arc or altering shared world elements.
  • If you want to do something big (kill a town official, break a curse, summon something dark), pitch it to the mods first. We’ll help you weave it in. Players are encouraged to help shape the living world of Between.
  • Do not expect the mods to always reach out first. If you have something you want to see or do — come to us. We love your ideas.

  • Real life happens. If you need a break, just tell us. We’re flexible with notice.
  • If you need a hiatus, please leave a comment on the member directory page.
  • The mod inbox is always open for feedback, plot ideas, or conflict resolution.

  • We want this to be immersive, eerie, and emotionally resonant — but also safe.
    ACTIVITY REQUIREMENT + CHARACTER CAP
To maintain a living, breathing world, the following minimum activity is required by the end of each calendar month:
  • One (1) plot specific log, narrative, or scene. Example: Full moon, town, or game event response.
  • One (1) scene or social post with at least ten (10) comments exchanged between two characters (five (5) per player).

  • Participation is expected. If you ghost without notice, your characters may be removed. This is the minimum required to remain active — we always welcome more engagement.

  • Players have a soft cap of four (4) characters.
  • Active players who contribute to community plotlines may be approved for additional characters. This is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • Players may apply for a second character after two (2) weeks of active participation with their first.
  • Mod Response Time
I will respond to messages within 48 hours whenever possible. I am very big on communications and will leave OOC notes or notes in discord letting people know when I have to step away for an extended time.
    Writing Format
  • Use the tags provided.
  • Use the codes provided for scenes/logs/threads and social posts.
  • Social posts should use the subject line to provide necessary information.
    Example:
Subject: Text | Date | Time of Day
    Text Body: RECIPIENT:Character
    SENDER: Character
TW: Any applicable warnings (TBD, but come back to edit)
[lj-cut stating how many messages have been sent] If you would like to use a fancy text code under the tag, go for it! But it can be as simple as an <*li*> tag and the message following.

The pre-made codes for logs/scenes/narratives and other social posts have all the information you need to fill in. Please remember to use tags.
