CRANE BRIDGE
A pedestrian and cycling bridge connecting Between to the Appalachian Trail and the C&O Canal Park in Maryland. The bridge hums faintly when you cross it alone, and sometimes lights appear below the water—soft, golden, and moving against the current. Locals say they’re “river lanterns,” left by those who never made it across.
ABIGAIL'S CREEK
A hidden waterfall behind The Lantern House, sacred to the Stillwater Pack. The trails seem to loop endlessly, keeping most wanderers at bay. Only those invited can find it. They say Abigail was the first witch, who called the water into being with her dying breath. On rare nights, the mist around the creek takes the shape of a woman walking barefoot along the banks.
RIVER-FIELDS TRAIL
A semi-strenuous 5.5-hour hike with creeks, falls, and too many stories to count. Hikers report glowing eyes from the trees and “mothlings” that follow quietly at a distance. Shadows flicker at the edges of vision, and voices mimic those you trust most. If you hear yourself calling your own name from the woods—no, you didn’t.
STAR ROCK
At the summit of River-Field’s Trail rests Star’s Rock—a boulder veined with patterns resembling constellations. Some say it’s the birthplace of the first coven; others, a meteor older than the mountain itself. Lie on it under a full moon and wish wisely. If the stars wink back, your wish may come true—but it will always cost something.
TWIXED PARK
A nature preserve, Twixed Park gained a public pool in the 1980s and a reputation for being “just slightly off.” The concession stand sells snow cones that change color mid-bite and pizza that tastes better than it should. The lake trails are lined with benches and old trees whispering in two tones. On windless days, ripples appear on the water without reason. There are fishing sites, camping sites, and trails for cycles and roller skating. Lifeguards at the pool report seeing children in the deep end after closing, laughing underwater where no one should breathe.
